NIE, TIE and residence permission in Spain: the differences

A number, a card and a right to reside are different.

NIE is the foreign-national identification number. TIE is a physical foreigner identity card. Residence permission is the legal entitlement to live in Spain under specified conditions. Obtaining a NIE for a purchase or an economic transaction does not grant residence or work rights.

Identify the document you need

For a property transaction, inheritance or economic operation, the relevant step may be assignment of a NIE. If you intend to live in Spain, first identify your residence regime: EU citizenship, family, study, work or another route. You can have a NIE without permission to work, or valid residence while waiting for a card.

NIE assignment and EX-15

The application normally uses EX-15 and requires identity evidence and a proven economic, professional or social reason. It is handled by the competent police authority or, from abroad, through the corresponding Spanish consulate. Representation, appointment and personal appearance must be confirmed for that channel. In Spain this is not a way to bypass immigration requirements for someone in an irregular situation.

Documents and fees

Prepare a valid passport, EX-15, evidence of the reason and the applicable government fee. Check names, nationality and passport details against each document. The government NIE fee is separate from the EU registration-certificate fee, TIE fee and the firm’s fee. Keep the receipt and do not request a new number if you already have one.

After assignment

The number is not renewed like a permit. The certificate, card or related permission may expire without changing the NIE itself. If a bank asks for an updated NIE, clarify whether it needs a non-residence certificate, valid ID, TIE or proof of tax status. The green EU registration certificate is not itself a TIE and must accompany valid identification.
