Online legal assistance throughout Spain

Spanish nationality by residence: documents, CCSE and DELE

A complete file must prove more than payment of a fee.

Nationality by residence requires evidence of identity, qualifying legal residence, the applicable route and integration. Required residence periods and documents depend on the case; not every applicant takes the same exams.

You can send your request in English. We will confirm the language and arrangements for professional assistance before accepting an engagement.

Basic and case-specific documents

Review residence identification, the complete valid passport and previous passports when relevant, birth certificate, criminal-record certificate from the country of origin and proof of the application fee. Add evidence for any reduced residence period and the specific situation, such as marriage to a Spanish citizen or birth in Spain. Minors and represented applicants have their own rules. Check names, dates and transliterations consistently.

Apostille, legalisation and translation

Foreign certificates require legalisation or apostille and an accepted translation where required, unless exempt. An apostille authenticates formal origin: it does not translate the document or prove every statement true. There is no universal three-month expiry for every certificate. Check the document, current procedure and applicable validity criteria. Include reverse sides, stamps and annexes; retain an old passport if it changes while the file is pending.

CCSE, DELE and exemptions

CCSE assesses constitutional and sociocultural knowledge. DELE A2 or higher proves Spanish where required. Nationals of countries where Spanish is official may qualify for the language-test exemption; this does not automatically exempt them from CCSE. Age, education and personal circumstances may support a specific exemption, adaptation or waiver, which must be correctly established. Register through official Instituto Cervantes channels.

Budget and next stages

The government application fee, CCSE or DELE when needed, certificates, sworn translations and professional fees are separate items. Check the current official amounts and exam session before paying; there is no official extra fee that guarantees faster approval. Filing nationality does not itself renew immigration status. A favourable decision may require a personal oath or declaration and registration within the applicable period.
