Family reunification in Spain: partner, children and parents

Check the sponsor, family relationship and evidence together.

General family reunification allows certain foreign residents to bring qualifying relatives to Spain. It is not the same procedure as residence for relatives of Spanish citizens or the EU family card.

You can send your request in English. We will confirm the language and arrangements for professional assistance before accepting an engagement.

Who sponsors and who joins

The sponsor must meet the required previous and continuing residence conditions: normally one year of residence and an application for at least another year are examined. Ascendants have stricter requirements, generally involving long-term residence, dependency and age, with humanitarian exceptions. Partners and children must meet their category’s conditions, including age, custody, disability and previous family ties. The under-26 rule from the Spanish-citizen family regime does not apply automatically.

Income and suitable housing

The ordinary reference for two family members, counting sponsor and joining relative, is 150% of IPREM, plus 50% for each additional member. The applicable IPREM, stable resources and household composition must be checked. There are flexibility rules, especially involving minors, so this formula is not an automatic refusal rule. Housing is normally evidenced by the competent authority’s report. If it is not issued within one month, the legally permitted alternative proof requires evidence of that delay. Health insurance and compulsory schooling of dependent children already in Spain must also be checked where applicable.

Application, visa and documentation

Prepare the sponsor’s permit and passport, EX-02, family-link evidence, income and housing documents and any custody or dependency evidence. The person entitled to apply submits the residence application. After approval, the relative completes the applicable visa process at the competent consulate, within the relevant period, then entry and documentation. A pending residence application is not a granted visa.

Work, renewal and separate costs

Spouses, partners and working-age children have the work entitlement provided by law; do not extend it automatically to every ascendant. Duration and renewal depend on the sponsor’s situation and any independent-residence route. Government, visa and TIE fees where applicable, certificates and sworn translations must be budgeted separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my mother simply because she is over 65?

No. Dependency, the sponsor’s status and the other conditions for ascendants must also be examined.

Is a Spanish citizen’s spouse subject to this income formula?

Not automatically. Relatives of Spanish citizens have a separate regime.
