Working in Spain as a student and extending your stay
Check what your student authorisation actually permits.
Student status does not authorise every type of work. Identify the course and the entitlement attached to your authorisation, then check hours, compatibility and continued academic progress.

Work entitlement and hours
Higher-education student authorisations carry the statutory employee and self-employed work entitlement where compatible with the studies. Other categories may need a separate work authorisation or have a different regime. The general limit is 30 hours a week where applicable, with sector-specific exceptions for intensive vocational training. Several employers do not multiply the limit. Any territorial restriction and compatibility exception must also be checked.
Placements and accompanying relatives
Distinguish employment from curricular or other placements subject to their own rules. Social Security registration and contribution obligations may still apply. A university agreement does not authorise unrelated work. A relative’s accompanying-student authorisation does not, by itself, give a right to work. Future employment income does not automatically replace the means required for student status.
Preparing the extension
Check enrolment, an eligible institution, academic progress, insurance and the required means, explaining relevant course changes. The ordinary filing window is two calendar months before expiry and three afterwards, with the statutory continuation effects and possible late-filing sanction. The ordinary extension decision period is one month with negative administrative silence, unlike the positive-silence rule for ordinary employee residence renewal. Keep the filing receipt.
When studies or work change
Even below the applicable hourly limit, work must remain compatible with studies. On completion, assess a qualifying change to residence and work or job-search residence where its conditions are met. Job-search residence does not by itself permit work. A refusal can affect both immigration and work status; provide current documentation to the employer.
